Thankfulness and Gratitude

  • Throughout the Bible, we have examples of being thankful in good times and bad. God is always worthy of our praise.

  • Gratitude improves: sleep, mood, physical and mental health, relationships, self-esteem, friendliness, forgiveness, community, honesty, and love.

  • Gratefulness decreases: depression, aggression, selfishness, anger, and heartache.

  • Tips to cultivate your gratefulness: Write someone a "thank you" note. Keep a gratitude journal. Count your blessing. Pray.

  • The world watches us in trials to see if we truly walk the walk or if we crumble with doubt.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 136:1

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.

John 10:10

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Psalm 30:1-12

I will exalt you, Lord,
   for you lifted me out of the depths
   and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
2 Lord my God, I called to you for help,
   and you healed me.
3 You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;
   you spared me from going down to the pit.

4 Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;
   praise his holy name.
5 For his anger lasts only a moment,
   but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night,
   but rejoicing comes in the morning.

6 When I felt secure, I said,
   “I will never be shaken.”
7 Lord, when you favored me,
   you made my royal mountain[c] stand firm;
but when you hid your face,
   I was dismayed.

8 To you, Lord, I called;
   to the Lord I cried for mercy:
9 “What is gained if I am silenced,
   if I go down to the pit?
Will the dust praise you?
   Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
10 Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me;
   Lord, be my help.”

11 You turned my wailing into dancing;
   you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
   Lord my God, I will praise you forever.

Psalm 28:6-7

Praise be to the Lord,
   for he has heard my cry for mercy.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
   my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,
   and with my song I praise him.

2 Corinthians 2:14

But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.

2 Timothy 3:2

People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
