Thanksgiving - 357th annual one this year

  • What is Thanksgiving being celebrated for? What and why do we do it today?

  • The pilgrims that came over from England were looking for freedom to practice their religion.

  • England was ran mostly by the Roman Catholic Church.

  • To escape that prejudice they went to Holland.

  • For ten years that worked out great, other than the economy there was minimal, and that their children were straying from their faith.

  • They came to the new world to preserve the future of their children.

  • They lived on their ship for the first year they were here, during that year almost half of them died. It was a huge price to pay for a hope to raise their families in their religion in freedom.

  • They then started to build their settlements, and began interacting with the Native Americans.

  • They were given advice from the locals on how to raise crops and build structures.

  • The end of that year they had, for the first time in quite a while, an abundance of food. And then they celebrated, and then the Native Americans brought more and joined the celebration.

  • The festivities lasted for more than 3 days until all the gathered, and brought food, was gone.

  • The Lord brought them to a place to be free to practice their religion, but also brought them people with whom to share the gospel with.

  • Today we come together with food and fun to give thanks to who? We have so much to be thankful for. And the one to give this thanks to is God!!

  • Psalms 50:14- bring your thank offering to God. We need to stop focusing on what we don't have or what we think we need. And remember to thank the Lord from our hearts for what we have.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18- rejoice, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will. We rejoice always because he never stops loving us. The world will be miserable, but we are set apart. Are doing what we are supposed to be doing? Are we rejoicing and giving thanks through prayer?

  • James 1:17- every good and perfect gift comes from above from he does not change. Rejoice, for when it is all said and done our prize is everlasting life with the Lord our God. So honor and praise the Lord while we are here, and give thanks.
