Continuing with heart issues - Adultery

  • The intentions of marriage is to be joined with another for life (Gen 2:24, Mark 10:7-9)

  • What about divorce? Jesus states that divorce is akin to adultery (Luke 16:18, Mark 10:11-12)

  • The two exceptions mentioned in the Bible for divorce are sexual immorality, Mathew 5:32, and abandonment of faith, 1 Corinthians 7:10-16.

  • Adultery can be committed physically, emotionally, and mentally. Adultery starts in the heart with lust.

  • God gives us warnings on how to avoid this, Proverbs 6:23-4,32. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 God does say there will be consequences if you don't heed these warnings Hebrews 13:4.

  • But luckily for us, we have a forgiving God, and asking for forgiveness is the first step in fixing the issue.

Matthew 5:27-30

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[a] 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[b] 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Genesis 2:24

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Mark 10:7-12

‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[a] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[b] So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

Luke 16:18

“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

1 Corinthians 7:10-16

To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. 16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

Proverbs 6:23-24, 32

For this command is a lamp,
   this teaching is a light,
and correction and instruction
are the way to life, 24 keeping you from your neighbor’s wife,
from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.

32 But a man who commits adultery has no sense;
   whoever does so destroys himself.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Hebrews 13:4

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
