The value of wisdom

  • First we need to make clear that there is a difference between wisdom, intelligence, and common sense.

  • Wisdom is the experienced discernment when faced with choices. Intelligence is the book smarts, and common sense is the street smarts.

  • If you lack wisdom the best way to gain it is to ask God for some of his!

  • As long as you consistently read the Bible, Do what it says, and pray, you will have it set!

  • Emptiness of work.

  • We worry about having enough in our lives. Whether it is enough money or things or comforts. At the end of the day all of our work we do here on earth will be gone to us. And the work that endures isn't our work. It's the work that God has done through us.

Ecclesiastes 2:12-26

Then I turned to consider wisdom, madness, and folly, for what will the king’s successor[a] be like? He[b] will do what has already been done. 13 And I realized that there is an advantage to wisdom over folly, like the advantage of light over darkness.

14 The wise person has eyes in his head,
but the fool walks in darkness.

Yet I also knew that one fate comes to them both. 15 So I said to myself, “What happens to the fool will also happen to me. Why then have I been overly wise?” And I said to myself that this is also futile. 16 For, just like the fool, there is no lasting remembrance of the wise, since in the days to come both will be forgotten. How is it that the wise person dies just like the fool? 17 Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

The Emptiness of Work

18 I hated all my work that I labored at under the sun because I must leave it to the one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will take over all my work that I labored at skillfully under the sun. This too is futile. 20 So I began to give myself over[c] to despair concerning all my work that I had labored at under the sun. 21 When there is a person whose work was done with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a person who has not worked for it, this too is futile and a great wrong. 22 For what does a person get with all his work and all his efforts that he labors at under the sun? 23 For all his days are filled with grief, and his occupation is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest. This too is futile.

24 There is nothing better for a person than to eat, drink, and enjoy[d][e] his work. I have seen that even this is from God’s hand, 25 because who can eat and who can enjoy life[f] apart from him?[g] 26 For to the person who is pleasing in his sight, he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and accumulating in order to give to the one who is pleasing in God’s sight. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

Proverbs 3:13-21

Happy is a man who finds wisdom
and who acquires understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver,
and her revenue is better than gold.
15 She is more precious than jewels;
nothing you desire can equal her.
16 Long life[a] is in her right hand;
in her left, riches and honor.
17 Her ways are pleasant,
and all her paths, peaceful.
18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her,
and those who hold on to her are happy.

19 The Lord founded the earth by wisdom
and established the heavens by understanding.
20 By his knowledge the watery depths broke open,
and the clouds dripped with dew.

21 Maintain sound wisdom and discretion.
My son, don’t lose sight of them.

James 1:5

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him.
