The life of John the Baptist - Who was he?
-
John is characterized by devotion
-
He was a precursor of the modern day day evangelist, he was not afraid to share God's Word
-
He was the first prophet since Malachi
-
John's birth was foretold by an angel
-
He lived a rugged life as an adult
-
John never claimed to be the Messiah, he was just here to lay the path for Jesus
-
Even after Jesus started his mission, John continued to evangelize, until he was killed for speaking the truth

Today's Scriptures

John 1:23

He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord—just as Isaiah the prophet said.”

Isaiah 40:3-4

A voice of one crying out:
Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness;
make a straight highway for our God in the desert.
4 Every valley will be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill will be leveled;
the uneven ground will become smooth
and the rough places, a plain.

Luke 1:16-17

He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.”

Matthew 3:4-6

Now John had a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then people from Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the vicinity of the Jordan were going out to him, 6 and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

John 3:28

You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’

Matthew 14:3-10

For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 since John had been telling him, “It’s not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.
6 When Herod’s birthday celebration came, Herodias’s daughter danced before them and pleased Herod. 7 So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she answered, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.” 9 Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests. 10 So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison.
